When it comes to school maintenance in South Western Sydney, Andrew’s the go-to guy. Along with his team, he takes charge of all maintenance issues within public schools across the district, including both primary schools and high schools.
“We take care of statutory maintenance, which is often called preventative maintenance – things like cleaning and inspections. We also do routine maintenance and address any essential urgent repairs and call-outs that are required throughout the day.
In essence, I make sure all contracts are running smoothly, everyone follows procedures and the communication between parties is always there. Communication is key.”
It comes as no surprise that Andrew and his team are often kept very busy throughout the day. In fact, Andrew’s days are jam-packed. But his main priorities lie in making sure everything is running smoothly, his clients are kept satisfied and their sites remain safe.
“A typical day sees me regularly keeping in touch with my client service managers who are out on the field. They can often come across a myriad of issues on-site, so dealing with that sort of thing is always a priority. Safety is everyone’s priority.
We also delegate a lot of work to subcontractors, so I’m often in contact with them as well. When it comes to clients, I regularly liaise with them to make sure all is running as it should be and our high standards are always being met.”
Before making his move to Facilities First, Andrew worked in the railway sector. A mechanical engineer by trade, he worked on manufacturing and power generation within railways. After well over a decade in the industry, things started to get a little stale. So, he decided he was due for a change.
“I left the railway sector because things started to get a little boring and monotonous. I worked in the building field for a little while and then moved to Spotless Facilities Services. I started as a Project Engineer and then went on to become a Contract and Operations Manager. In fact, I worked with the same sort of clients back then as I do now with Facilities First – just in different regions. I’d say it was a pretty smooth transition for me!”
Andrew was drawn to Facilities First for a number of reasons, but the role’s diversity was a big drawcard. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for Andrew to grow and progress in an exciting role – for an exciting company.
“As a mechanical engineer, I have an acute knowledge of how things work. I really enjoy finding a solution to a problem – that whole process is a real passion for me. I love working for Facilities First because it’s diverse. Every day is different and that’s a big attractor. I get to learn a lot and I get to teach and mentor others…”
Andrew is also quick to sing the praises of his talented team.
“My team is fantastic – everyone is. We’ve just got such a great structure and culture at Facilities First. It absolutely makes an impact on how I get things done and my overall job satisfaction. I certainly enjoy everything about my role and am excited to see what’s in store for the future at Facilities First.”
Andrew’s passion for maintenance extends well into his weekends. His spare time is spent on all things DIY, home renos and flipping the odd house or two. He also loves a good spot of jiu jitsu. That being said, he always makes time for his young family. With two toddlers in tow, Andrew is on-call 24/7. And that’s just how he likes it.
