Martin is an avid learner. A carpenter by trade, he was looking for a fresh opportunity to step into a new space. That’s when Facilities First came in and took him under our wing, bringing him to exciting new opportunities in the safety space.
“I started with Facilities First just over three years ago. I was previously working with a government agency as a carpenter. I then came over to Facilities First as a carpenter and team leader.
Within that time there was an opportunity to step into a WHSEQ Advisor role and I put my hand up for it. Safety has always interested me and I wanted to follow that path. I’ve been doing this role now for just over two years and I’m really pleased with the journey so far.”
Not only did Martin discover a new career path, but he also took advantage of the endless learning opportunities on offer.
“I’ve really enjoyed the training that Facilities First has provided me. I was offered a Certificate IV Training in WHS and they continually discuss more training opportunities with me so that I can continue to learn new skills.
They really make sure that I have access to training that goes hand in hand with my role and it’s been a great asset to continually self-improve and move up the corporate ladder in the company.”
As a WHSEQ Advisor, Martin looks after all safety aspects, making sure that Client Service Managers are equipped with the right instructions and paperwork to be able to achieve their dedicated outcomes.
Not only does Martin look after all things safety, but he’s also been part of integral projects to help keep the business running smoothly, in particular implementing new technology that ensures a seamless inspection process.
“One of the biggest projects I’ve worked on for the company is a system called Velocity. It’s an IT system that Facilities First has been using for just over a year, but it records our inspections via the internet.
I was involved with implementing that system to our business and it’s been fantastic seeing it grow to where it is now, especially as we do thousands of inspections over the internet.”
It’s projects like this that Martin absolutely enjoys and that keep him passionate.
He loves the flexibility on offer at Facilities First. But more importantly, it’s the investment that he has received from his managers that’s second to none.
“I’ve had so much guidance from my managers throughout my journey. I’ve really been taken under their wings and I appreciate the extra training and the quality time that they have spent helping me improve.
Going from a carpenter into the safety world, there’s a lot of new things to learn. But I’ve really been given a lot of time to discover the role and learn the ropes. It’s great learning from other managers and understanding different processes.”
For Martin, safety isn’t just about keeping staff healthy and unharmed. It’s also about being proactive and looking out for one another.
“Care is at the heart of what I do by making sure our staff are safe and they can go home to their loved ones. But it’s also important to encourage people to be proactive about hazards and report it to their manager or advisor, or fix it immediately if it’s safe to do so.
Care is about making sure that you’re looking out for others and not just for yourself. It’s important that everyone pays attention to their environment.”
Facilities First has also provided Martin with thrilling rewards for a job well done. As a passionate Western Sydney Wanderers fan, Martin was ecstatic to be able to watch a live game at Western Sydney Stadium in the box office with his peers.
“It was an amazing experience to be able to watch the game in the box office, as I’ve never been in one before. It’s an experience I’ll never forget and it was so great to be a part of that.”
Martin also loves playing soccer in his free time.
